India defeated England by five wickets in the fourth Test of the series after a close finish at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on Monday.

The victory meant that the home side also took an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-match series.

Shubman Gill scored an unbeaten fifty, while chasing a target of 192 runs, to lead India to victory. India reached the target in the second session on day four of the contest.

Having started today's play at 40 for 0, India quickly went from 84 for 0 to 120 for 5. However, Gill (52) and Dhruv Jurel (39) scored 72 in an unbeaten stand for the sixth wicket to help India get over the finishing line.

“We were put under pressure by them [England] but we got a good start by our openers. However, losing couple of wickets put pressure. But Jurel came out and took the pressure off. You have to see the situation and play accordingly - they were bowling well and protecting the boundaries. Our mindset was to not give maidens and keep picking the singles,” Gill said after the match.

“I just told him [Jurel] you batted beautifully in the first innings and to have the same mindset. The way he came down and played was beautiful.

“The first innings the ball was not turning much and hence I didn't use my feet, but second innings I decided to take the LBW out of the equation by using my feet.

“It means the world to us, coming here and having to play the series with not much batting experience, having lost KL Rahul after the first Test. But Rohit bhai backed us and gave us the confidence to go out and play with freedom.”

Off-spinner Shoaib Bashir bagged figures of 3-79, to go with his five first innings wickets, but could not keep England alive in the series.

England scored 353 all out in their first innings and led by 46 after India's 307.

But spinners Ravichandran Ashwin and Kuldeep Yadav took nine wickets on Sunday as England collapsed from 47-0 to 145 all out in their second innings.

This is England's first series loss since Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum came together as captain and coach.

The fifth and final Test is scheduled in Dharamsala from March 7.
